On Wednesday evening, January 27, the Senate Judiciary Committee is going to hear the follow four bills:
Bad bills:
SB1381, Ebbin, bans gun in Capitol Square and building contained therein, as well as state government buildings.
SB1382, Favola, takes away gun rights for a conviction of misdemeanor domestic violence. Under federal law that amounts to a lifetime prohibition. That lifetime ban would disappear if this bill did 3 things: match federal definition of domestic violence, take away all rights, and have a mechanism for those rights to be restored. If those changes were made to the bill, VCDL would drop its opposition to the bill.
Good bills:
SB1430, DeSteph, removes the requirement for an unnecessary state background check for someone purchasing an NFA item.
SB1466, Obenshain, exempts CHP holders from local gun-control that is now allowed by 15.2-915.
